Costume Tips for Salem Halloween Weekend

Short answer: build the costume over warm layers, wear real shoes under it, keep it narrow enough to move through a crowd, leave weapon-shaped props at home, and plan to take the mask off on the street. Downtown closes to cars on the busiest days, and on Halloween itself downtown streets close to all traffic by noon. Essex Street becomes a slow river of people from late morning until the city shuts things down at night. Start with what you would wear anyway: a base layer, a fleece or sweater, jeans or leggings, and warm socks. Then put the costume on top. Wings, hoop skirts, long trains, and anything that sticks out more than your shoulders will catch on people, railings, and doorways all day. You will spend the evening apologizing. Tall headpieces get knocked off in crowds. Keep the silhouette close to your body, and keep the details on the top half where photos happen.

Costumes are welcome everywhere. Realistic weapon props are not. Anything that looks like a real gun or a real blade is a problem with police, and there are a lot of police downtown that weekend. Obviously fake, foam, or cartoonish is fine. Full-face masks are allowed on the street, but most bars, restaurants, and museums will ask you to remove them at the door, and you will want to anyway to see the brick. Lines for restrooms are long. A costume you cannot easily get out of becomes an emergency around hour three. Pockets, or a small crossbody bag worn in front, for phone, cards, cash, and ID. Do not put your wallet in a costume pocket that does not close.

The people who commit go for warmth first: a full witch or wizard robe over normal clothes, a Victorian coat, a plague doctor with a real jacket under the cloak, a monster onesie.
